PAULETTE GODDARD - AUTOGRAPH LETTER DOUBLE SIGNED 05/30/1973 - HFSID 36188 PAULETTE GODDARD Goddard handwrote and signed this letter twice to a friend about her house and how it is complete even with a room for when her friend comes to visit. Autograph Letter Signed: "P." on front and verso "P.", 1 page, 6¾x8½, front and verso. Parto Ronco, 30 May 1973. Addressed to: "Deer [sic] Pal,". In full: "Just back from a fast & profitable spin in Zurich. Now, have a full Staff - in the house- a pleasure! I have too many but better than nothing? The house is gorgeous without furniture and everything a collector fancies. Your room is shinning when do you arrive Montecatin I forget. Love to Bill and anybody else that stacks up yours (over) P.S. I Harriet is over smart. II. Everybody in Swisse [sic] thinks Watergate is something like the Ruho on the Rhine. The only ones that have economic problems here are those who bought U. S. Stocks on margin. Damn few. The Swisse [sic] have Swisse [sic] Francs & the French still have Napoleon coins & ingots in their gardens.". PAULETTE GODDARD, a former teen Broadway chorus girl, first attracted attention when she was featured reclining on a prop crescent moon in the 1928 Ziegfeld musical, Rio Rita. She reportedly made several two-reel comedies for Hal Roach (in a blond wig) before being featured as a "Goldwyn Girl" in Eddie Cantor's film, Kid from Spain, in 1932. Goddard shot to stardom when she was cast by Charlie Chaplin in his 1936 film, Modern Times. She also won Chaplin's heart as well as the role, but there were questions as to whether the two were ever legally married, and her relationship with Chaplin cost her the one role that she truly coveted: Scarlett O'Hara in the 1939 epic, Gone With the Wind. She also later married German writer Enrich Maria Remarque (All Quiet on the Western Front), who was Jewish. Goddard was coaxed out of retirement for a made-for-TV movie, The Snoop Sisters, in 1972.
