Description: This is the "Les Dragons de Villars Maillart" in the Peasant Valley French opera plate series. The English version is named "The Hermit's Ball". The opera tells the story of the early 1700's Huguenot persecutions in Savoy. The transfer scene of a Huguenot / Protestant begging a young woman, Rosa, to not give him away to the Soldiers / Dragoons. The transfer decoration has been hand colored ("clobbed"). The outermost rim is painted with gold trim. The plate is then circled in a forest green band. I will be offering another dinner plate in this series ("Faust") and an unusually large sized 13" platter (featuring "Mignon" in the center with medallions of other operas on the rim). If of interest, please see my other items. Always happy to pass through discounts on combined shipping. Frequently misattributed to Parry Vieille, the PV hallmark was used by Mittledorfer, Strauss, Inc. of New York City on imported pieces. Mitteldorfer Straus registered the trademark for the first time in 1928. I have also seen these French opera plates misattributed to Pillyvuyt. Note some photos appear redundant because I take photos from all possible angles. On symmetrical items, these photos may appear redundant when there are no distinguishing differences or condition issues between side views. The item listed is being sold as is, as pictured and as described to the best of my knowledge. If you have a question on an item prior to purchase, please ask. Remember, when buying vintage expect imperfections as these items have a history and have been in the possession of others. I try to list EVERY flaw which would be commented on something in an antique or vintage condition – this does not mean all imperfections resulting from normal wear & use require comment. My goal is to have no rude surprises upon receipt.
