Bird-shaped orange-red flowers appear along the stems in spring or fall, sometimes followed by reddish fruit. Full sun in cool coastal climates, part shade inland. Requires very little irrigation once established. Great container plant, architectural focal point, lovely when planted en masse. Attracts hummingbirds. Good drainage is very essential for this plant to thrive. It needs low amounts of supplemental water once established. Irrigate by watering deeply and then allowing the top several inches of soil to dry between waterings. This encourages the plant to send roots deep into the earth in search of moisture, helping it to become established, prevent root rot, build drought tolerance, and resilience to heat and cold. The length of time between waterings will vary depending on your growing conditions and environment. These plants are sold for the purposes of ornamental cultivation.
