The ancient Greek gods ruled over all of nature from Mount Olympus. Zeus, god of thunder and lightning and father of the family of god, lived atop Mt. Olympus, governing the sky. His aquatic brother, Poseidon, lived beneath the waves and ruled his watery domain with trident in hand. Their third brother, Hades, ruled over the underworld as god of the dead, accompanied by his three-headed dog Cerberus. Together, these three brothers defeated the Titans in battle and thereby claimed rulership over all the cosmos. Each claimed his own domain (sky, sea and underworld), with the solid earth available to all three concurrently. These stories have come down to us as Greek mythology, the most complete body of legends and religious beliefs from the ancient world. Talisman Coins and the Perth Mint (Australia's precious metals experts) are proud to bring you this spectacular new series. Each two troy ounce pure silver coin is an extra-thick piedfort, struck in ultra high relief. These coins are in the medallic style; they are rimless, with plain edges and an antique finish, to make a superb addition to any collection of numismatic art and treasures. Presented in a luxurious, round wooden display case, with an exquisitely detailed scene of the three god-brothers on the lid, each gem represents the pinnacle of the minter's craft! The mintage limit is only 1,500 coins - act fast! Availability Notes - This offer represents a pre-sale. An Unbelievable, Medallic Coin in Elegant, Luxury Packaging! Hades, God of the Dead and Ruler of the Underworld In ancient Greek mythology, Hades was worshiped as the God of the Underworld and the ruler of the dead. In addition to the underworld, he ruled over any and all things beneath the Earth. For this reason he was also known as the God of Wealth, as he presided over all the precious metals that existed underground. Historically, Hades was often depicted sitting on his ebony throne with Cerberus, the three-headed watchdog, by his side. He was also known to wear a helmet of invisibility given to him by the Cyclops to help in the battle against the Titans. Hades’ other symbols include the key to the underworld, a cornucopia or a two-pronged pickax, and the cypress and narcissus plants which were considered sacred to him. The coin’s dynamic obverse depicts depicts the inscrutable Hades sitting on his throne made of bones and skulls, wearing his invisibility helmet. He is accompanied by Cerberus, the three-headed watchdog. The Hades Silver Medallic Piedfort is the third in the popular and exciting Gods of Olympus Program, to be released by the Perth Mint. Coins featuring the following ancient Greek gods are planned: Zeus, God of the Skies and Ruler of Mt. Olympus Poseidon, God of the Oceans and Seas Hades, God of the Dead and Ruler of the Underworld What is a Piedfort? Hard to find and popular with collectors for more than a century, piedforts are highly sought after. We get asked all the time, "What is a piedfort?" There are two different, but related, stories of the origin of the word "piedfort". The first says that it literally means "strong foot" in French (from pied, foot and fort, strong). The second says this word was appropriated by the mint centuries ago to mean "heavy measure" or "heavy weight". In both cases, the sense of serious heft to the coin is obvious. Often the word "piedfort" is translated as "double-thick", but this is neither a literal translation nor a precisely accurate definition. Numismatically speaking, any coin that is 50% or more thicker than a standard version qualifies as a piedfort, although some piedforts are, indeed, twice as thick as normal. Finally, the age-old question, "How is the word pronounced?" Coming from French, it is not pronounced as it is spelled; that is, don't say, "pide - fort". Rather, "pee - ay - four" (three syllables) is a good approximation. Obverse The coin’s dynamic obverse depicts depicts the inscrutable Hades sitting on his throne made of bones and skulls, wearing his invisibility helmet. He is accompanied by Cerberus, the three-headed watchdog. The Perth Mint's "P" mint mark is judiciously placed to the left, at the 9:00 position near the rim. The legend HADES defines the theme. Reverse Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, in crowned profile facing right. This portrait, featuring Her Majesty wearing a tiara and pearl earrings, was executed by the sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley. The legend ELIZABETH II, the date of issue and denomination also appear. The legend 2 OZ 999 SILVER guarantees the weight and purity. Its nearest neighbors are Kiribati, Samoa and Fiji. It is comprised of four reef islands and five true atolls. Its population of 11,992 makes it the third-least populated independent country in the world, with only Vatican City and Nauru having fewer inhabitants. It is also the second-smallest member by population of the United Nations. In terms of physical land size, at just 10 square miles Tuvalu is the fourth smallest country in the world, larger only than the Vatican City, Monaco and Nauru. The first inhabitants of Tuvalu were Polynesian people, who arrived about 3000 years go. The islands came under Great Britain's sphere of influence in the late 19th century. The Ellice Islands were administered by Britain as part of a protectorate from 1892 to 1916 and as part of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands Colony from 1916 to 1974. In 1974 the Ellice Islanders voted for separate British dependency status as Tuvalu, separating from the Gilbert Islands which became Kiribati upon independence. Tuvalu became fully independent within The Commonwealth in 1978. with Queen Elizabeth II as titular head of state. Because Tuvalu has few natural resources it has been dependent in recent years upon aid from larger, more developed nations, including Australia, New Zealand and the United States. The Perth Mint of Australia is officially commissioned by the government of Tuvalu to produce legal tender coinage for the island nation.
