Description: Vintage Peruvian Chancay Burial Doll Trio Dolls Cloth Textile Folk Art Antique Peru These handmade dolls are modeled specifically on dolls found in the central coastal valleys of Peru, the lands of the Chancay tribal culture. Women in Peru have used tattered fragments of cloth from ancient grave sites to construct dolls honoring their ancestors. Offered here are a mother & child set and a set of three dolls sewn together in a grouping with a crude hanging loop attached. The large doll's trapezoidal head and body are composed of a plant fiber, probably reed. Two fabric layers have been wrapped around the fabric layers with large stitches holding the pieces together. The head is covered in a plain woven cloth of tan color while the body coverings are of a cloth with stripes and another of geometric design. The arms and legs are wrapped in a tan cording ending in four finger-like extensions giving the appearance of bird feet. The mother doll has a smaller version of herself attached to her right arm representing her baby. The small trio of dolls are less structured with straight arms only. They appear to have been made by folding the base fabric around the inner layer of cloth. Each has differing cloth patterns. They are sewn to a fabric covered square holding them together. A loop of the fabric may have been intended for use as a hanging device. All dolls share similar facial features. Eyes, nose and mouth are embroidered with long stitches using threads of differing colors. The mother doll has hair comprised of loose, curly threads that have been, most likely, loosened from woven fabric. She has a strip of fabric with a geometric pattern serving as a head band. All other dolls have cloth coverings wrapping around their heads.
