Peter Thomson was the lead vocalist and songwriter for the band, Secession, a Scottish synth-pop band from Glasgow that was active between 1983 & 1987. I was lucky enough to see Secession perform live at an Edinburgh nightclub, Buster Browns, and immediately knew that Peter was one of the most gifted songwriters and singers I had ever seen. Okay, I was really drunk, but that drunken courage allowed me the confidence to talk to Peter and convince him that I could “manage” him. I signed Peter and Secession to the Beggars Banquet label and they released 2 singles, "Fire Island" and “Touch” in 1984. Secession then signed to Siren Records (a subsidiary of Virgin Records). They released 5 singles (“Michael”, “Radioland”, “Promise”, “Sneakyville”, and “The Magician”) throughout 1986 & 1987, until they released Secession’s only album, “A Dark Enchantment”, in late 1987. Peter battled alcohol addiction and what has now been identified as an undiagnosed mental illness. Peter finally took his own life on March 28th, 2001. Over the year prior to his suicide, Peter wrote and recorded some new songs on his home studio setup. Peter gave me the only copies of those final songs on cassette. The cassettes remained unplayed, until the end of 2017 after Margaret Thomson, Peter Thomson’s widow reached out to discuss the idea of honoring Peter’s memory. Luckily, I had kept all of the new songs, as well as all of the original Secession demos. This album is split into 2 periods of Peter’s life, with “Side 1” containing the demos of the 5 songs, Sneakyville, The Magician, New Messiah, Charlie Don’t Surf, and Michael, that I used to get the new album deal with Siren / Virgin Records back in 1985. On “Side 2” I included the final songs that Peter wrote in 2000 and 2001. Those final songs are, 2001 (Instrumental), Tomorrow Belongs To Me, Finest Hour, Make You Cry, and 2001 (I’m Afraid Of Getting Old). They can definitely be interpreted as someone reaching out for help, even though they are disguised by Peter’s enigmatic style of making tortured lyrics sound very “pop”. One of the songs, 2001 (I’m Afraid Of Getting Old), was nearly lost due to there being 4 other instrumental versions of that song on various cassettes and I initially presumed that it was another instrumental version until just under a minute of the music had played, then suddenly Peter started singing on this one version. The vocals are just Peter’s guide vocals as he was working out the song, but very poignant as he eventually sings the line “I’m afraid of getting old”, and then sings a couple more lines and abruptly stops the 4 track cassette. It may actually be the last thing Peter ever recorded. Please remember that the only master copies of all these songs are on old cassettes, and Peter always used to recycle cassettes by recording over and over old recordings, so the quality is definitely rough and raw, but Peter’s songs still stand out, and that is all that matters.
