Description: Petrified Palmwood • Juab County Utah Palmoxylon hebberttii • Oligocene Age How Do I Know It’s Palmwood? Just look at a cross-section of the internal structure. You will see what looks like a bunch of polka dots staring back up at you. These are sclerenchyma bundles that are actually long tubes that comprise part of the woody tissues and gave the wood its vertical strength. Depending upon the angle that the specimen is broken or cut, these structures appear as spots, tapering rods, or continuous lines. Over time these rods filled with silica which captured a wide range of colors and designs that, when cut, can be incorporated into jewelry, cabinet specimens or ornamental features. Collecting Location & Age This specimen was collected west of the town of Nephi in Juab County, Utah. It was found in the Sage Creek Limestone Member of the Goldens Ranch Formation which is dated to the Oligocene Epoch, specifically 33 million years ago.
