Description: After a bit more than 60 years of collecting it is time to move the collection along to new homes. From my ancient coin collection is a classic Phonecian coin, issued by the city state of Arados, somewhere between 285-259 BC (COP 1051). This coin measures 21mm in diameter and the obverse has a beautiful and classic stylized design of Alexander the Great as Hercules wearing a lion headdress. The Phonecian merchants traded and bartered across the Mediterranean and were some of the first to adopt metal currency. Each city minted their own coinage with the portrait of their ruler, an effigy of a diety, and local symbols like ships. Arados was a strategic city state located between Syria and Tripolis. On the reverse is a bow in a quiver and a club. I purchased this one almost 30 years ago from the Colosseum Coin Exchange out of NJ. They were the largest mail order and phone auction house in the US for ancients which is the way it was done before the internet. As I got this one a while back I can offer it at a good price and will also provide FREE SHIPPING to within the US.
