The cross is medieval in origin and it is thought that the shaft was originally octagonal; according to an inscription at its base it was reset in 1897. It is sometimes referred to as the Butter Cross which suggests that it was a place where food was left out for plague victims although there is no specific evidence for that in this case. The cross may have been the work of Nicholas de Charnels who built St Mark's Church nearby.
