The school is one of the oldest non-ecclesiastical buildings in Newark, and inclusive of later buildings, is Listed Grade II*. It housed a local museum until 2005, since when it has been unoccupied. However, in 2012 the Heritage Lottery Fund made available �3.5m to help fund a �5.4m project to turn the site into a museum which will include a National Civil War Centre, as well as aspects of the area covered in the present Millgate Museum.
