Both tunnels are unlit, cyclists are advised to use lights when passing through the tunnel (walkers would similarly be advised to carry torches). The tunnel was previously used by trains heading south, towards Northampton. A separate parallel tunnel was used by trains heading north. The northbound tunnel is older, as the route was originally a single track. The second, southbound tunnel was built to enable the railway to become double track.
