It is a category B building and was listed on 02/05/1990. Group Items: N/A, Group Cat: N/A, Map Ref: NT 554 704. Description: Shiells and Thomson, dated 1882. 2-storey Baronial house. Squared and snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings; 1st floor. Cornice-like gutter at eaves. N (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: 3 stage off-set rounded tower at centre, with round arched door and flanking lights, each with roll-moulded arrises; doorway set in advanced, gabled porch with ornate foliage to composite capitals and to gable heraldic shield with inscription above left light. 3 tall 1st floor windows and smaller window in top stage, breaking eaves, with semi-circular pedimented dormerhead; initialled panel to left of upper window, with entwined REB. Gabled bay flanking tower to right with rounded angle to left and bipartite windows at both floors; gablehead bearing acorn-carved panel; further heraldic panel at ground to left of window. Round 2-stage angle tower at right, with 3 tall windows to each floor. Slightly lower and slightly recessed bays to left of centre tower, with canted window at ground and 2, 1st floor windows with ornately carved pediments. Square corbelled, angle turret to outer left angle. W ELEVATION: full-height canted window off-centre to left, corbelled to gablehead with carved panel. Slightly recessed bay to right of centre with 2 tall ground floor windows and 1, 1st floor window with Venetian style pediment. Slightly advanced gabled outer bay to right, with full-height canted, piend roofed window. S ELEVATION: simpler but with details from N and W. Single storey single bay of service building to outer right. E ELEVATION: shallow service court formed by advanced outer bays with lower eaves; 2 corbelled angle turrets to right-hand advanced bays. Plate glass glazing to sash and case windows. Slate roofs, with fish-scales to conical tower roofs; lead finials to towers and turrets. Decorative weathervane to entrance tower. Thistle and other decorative stone finials to window pediments and crowstepped gables. INTERIOR: fine original work retained; decorative geometric tiling to hall and simple Jacobean stair. Ornate plaster cornices and Jacobean ceilings. Dark marble chimneypieces. Notes: Later essay in Baronial style adorned with stone carving.
