To begin with, it formed part of the Norwich (Bowthorpe) Workhouse. The nurses home and the adjacent three-storey infirmary dating from 1939 survived the Baedeker raid on 29/30 April 1942 which destroyed the adjacent buildings, killing ten patients during frantic efforts to evacuate them.
