The Pink Palace, named for the pink marble covering it was the home being built by Clarence Saunders, founder of the Piggly Wiggly grocery store chain. The city of Memphis purchased it when Saunders lost his fortune in the stock market. In 1930, it became the Pink Palace Museum of Natural History and Industrial Arts.
