Description: Catlinite Pipe The quarries at Pipestone, Minnesota are the only place where catlinite (red pipestone) is found. This soft red stone has been quarried for centuries by native people. The trade routes were extensive. Evidence of this has been found throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central and South America. The quarries are still in use and are considered sacred by native people. With the coming of the fur trappers the Hudson's Bay Company and North West Company both realized the importance of the stone as they often saw it in use. They both began producing metal smokable trade axes in a variety of styles fashioning them and a wide variety of other items after the catlinite hand carved pieces they had seen and used. Since each is hand-made, they differ in dimensions, size and design. Each is one of a kind representing the style of the artist and general appearance of the design. The sizes and details vary between each unique pipe and artist and with the catlinite itself. This hand carved and designed replica plains pipe measures about 3 1/2 inches x 7/8-inch x 2 5/8 inches. Especially made to easily carry in your pipe bag. The hand carved stem is 9 inches in length. The overall length is about 11 inches. Note the hand etched feather drops on one side of the hatchet face and the chief on the other. Even the "sharp" edge of the blade is scored and looks file sharpened. These pipes make wonderful, easily mailable pieces of authentic Native American art to give or to collect. This pipe was crafted by Wahpeton Sioux artist Betty Tellinghuisen. Other styles are listed in the store. Produced and/or maintained in a smoke free, pet free environment. Be sure to add me to your favorites list! Check out my other items!
