Pitcher’s leather flower blooms on new growth so it is best to cut back old stems in late winter before new growth. Like many clematises Pitcher’s leather flower prefers to have its root area shaded and for that reason is often found at the base of other plants using them as support, though this species has a high heat tolerance. As such Pitcher’s leather flower can be used to twine through shrubs…to best effect used with shrubs with a more open architecture. Also, very affective as a mounding groundcover. The showy, solitary, nodding, urn-shaped flowers are unique and bloom from late spring through summer—flowers are light purple to purplish-blue, its sepals (not petals of which this species has none) are recurved at the tip with slight frilling. The seed heads, with their hairy tails, look like a starburst and can persist into winter extending visual interest. This is not an aggressive vine and a place for it can be found in any garden. Actually quite common but often overlooked in nature even when in flower. The leather flower group of clematis all have similar downward nodding bell-shaped flowers.
