Description: POISONOUS ANIMALS OF MALAYA M. W. F TWEEDIE MALAYA PUBLISHING HOUSE: SINGAPORE 1941 “In case the title of this book should create the impression that life in Malaya is rendered hazardous by the incidence of poisonous snakes, scorpions, centipedes and the like, I hasten to reassure the reader that the problem presented by such animals is much less formidable than in most other tropical and sub-tropical countries. Dangerous poisonous snakes are represented by fewer species and are far less abundant than, for instance, in India, and records of deaths from their bite are rare in this country. I have never heard of a case of the bite of a spider or the sting of a scorpion ending fatally in Malaya, whereas in Africa and tropical and sub-tropical America there occur species so venomous that deaths from their poison are by no means unknown. Nevertheless, numerous poisonous animals do exist in this country, some of them dangerous and it is as well for anyone who contemplates making a hobby of natural history here, or whose profession renders him responsible for the welfare of men working out of doors, to have some idea of how to distinguish those animals which are to be avoided on account of their poisonous bite or sting and of the measures to take in case of accidents.” From the Introduction.
