Description: This is a rare small agate replaced limb cast which is from the Clarno Formation and was found on the south fork of the Crooked River in Crook County, Oregon near Paulina. This beautiful Paulina Oregon agate replaced wood limb cast has been cut and polished on one end and has some nice banding to the agate on the polished face. This sweet piece measures 2 inches long by 0.81 inches wide. Limb cast fossils from this location were formed when molten lava encased a tree, branch / limb, stump or other decayed wood piece/s and burned away the wood leaving a wood shaped cavity behind which was later filled with chalcedony and other minerals which were in the ground water which completely filled the space left behind by the burned wood. As a result these limb casts can preserve the fine outer details of the wood like the grain, knots, branch nubs and bark but not the growth rings of the trees although some can have great banding to the agate. The most prize pieces have pink hued agate, green chlorite inclusions or dendritic fern like inclusions. This agate cast specimen would be an excellent addition to any rock and mineral collection.
