Description: Pope Gosser 14.5" X 9.5" Hard China 1920-1930's Oval Serving Platter Made In USA. Mr. Pope and Mr. Gosser establish the Pope-Gosser China Company in 1903 and started producing high grade translucent china vases. However, the company did not finding a profit in this line. Then company switched over to semi-porcelain dinnerware which was harder than the usual dinnerware of the times. Pope-Gosser China Co. made two noteworthy dinnerware shapes which were the Louvre and the Edgemore. however this platter is not one of these shapes. The company continued to make semi-porcelain dinnerware until 1958. The Pope-Gosser China Co. used the Pope-GosserChinahallmarkin both capital and small letters until about 1908, at this time they adopted the Unicornto the hallmark. In 1920, the lettering on the hallmark mark was changed to just POPE-GOSSER CHINA in all capital letters and the Unicorn was dropped from the hallmark. The hallmark on this platter is greenish in color and the words POPE-GOSSER forming an arc over the word CHINA.The Pope-Gosser China Co. began including Made in U.S.A. in the late 1920s to about 1931. A pattern code would be below the hallmark and as part of the hallmark however, this platter does not have a pattern code on it. The hallmark is under the final glazing. It has a Scalloped rim. This platter has two small chips on the underside at the rim. Other than that, it is in excellent condition for its age with no cracks or repairs. Pet free non-smoking home.
