Description: LA GRANDE FLORA DE COLORADO DE MONTANA Y LLANOSCOLORADO'S which translates The GREAT FLORA OF Colorado MOUNTAINS AND PLAINS. Series I by publisher Frank S. Thayer, of this magnificent collaborative work taking 18 months in production, beginning with the choice of subjects from 3,000 different flowers of the region, the watercolors by Oscar Achleitner, then the chromolithographs of Percy W. Franklin, followed by the botanical descriptions by Sarah Bennett Walker. Folio edition ("De Luxe") with a limitation of 1,000. This item is numbered 127/1000. A high quality series of very fine images, beautifully presented. It is very likely that far fewer than 1000 copies of this beautiful collection of twelve chromolithographic studies of the flowers of the mountains and plains of Colorado were ever produced. Each botanical print is matted on heavy cardstock and set in an embossed oval frame with a blindstamped border, and an accompanying tissue guard printed with the botanical and/or common name of the flower. Twelve beautiful botanical chromolithographs spanning the mountains and plains of Colorado are matted with decorative blind stamping around the oval openings, all in two olive green clothbound portfolio's with snaps. The author, Sarah Bennett Walker, was known as "Mrs. Colorado Wildflower." Unbound as issued, with thick ribbons to tie the plates in place. There has been some archival restoration to the Folio containers themselves. There is some Chipping, folds, age yellowing on some of the descriptive tissue guards. The images are excellent with some age yellowing. The image frames show some yellowing and one has wrinkles. All Edges and corners of portfolios show age wear. Atlas Folio's are 20" x 16". The subjects are: the Wild Rose; Rocky Mountain Aster; Fairy's Torch; Tiger Lily; Gaillardia; Pentstemon; Gilia; Sand Lily; Rocky-Mountain Thimble Berry; Rocky Mountain Columbine; Fringed Gentian; and Evening Primrose. Thayer explains in the introduction that the work was begun in May 1900 by Oscar Achleitner of Denver who "commenced the task of painting the most popular of varied species from mountain and plain...[and] transcribed in water colors the studies comprising this collection." The paintings were then transferred to lithographic stones by Percy W. Franklin of Montclair, Colorado. The text accompanying each plate is by Mrs. Sarah Bennett Walker of Sedalia, Colorado. Thayer concludes by promising a "second series" in 1902, but this never appeared. A scarce and beautiful work. Please see photos. HA 740 071419 363 Brought to you by Antiques1000.
