His most famous invention is the Wheel of Life, the first device for animating images into motion sequences. He became a pioneer of cinematography. The wheel of life, also called phenakistoscope, fantascop or stroboscope, was invented around 1832 by Joseph Plateau and at the same time (1832) by Simon von Stampfer in Vienna.
