Description: RailroadTreasures offers the following item: Postcard Southern Railway System 4-6-2 Locomotive #1408 5 1/2 X 9 inches JT-347 Postcard JT-347 Southern Railway System 5 x 9 SOUTHERN RAILWAY SYSTEM Southern Railway's USRA designed 4-6-2's were firmly established in passenger service when a final order of five was placed with the Baldwin Locomotive Works, for delivery in 1928. Previously, fifty-nine Ps-4 class heavy Pacifics had arrived from the American Locomotive Company (beginning in 1923) at plants in Schenectady, New York, and Richmond, Virginia. Special attention must be accorded the 1926 built Ps-4's out of Richmond. Those particular locomotives had startled both the traveling public and press when they arrived on Southern property (Spencer Shops in North Carolina) finished in Virginia green with gold lettering and trim. The inspired colors were similar to those appearing on railways in England, and viewed by Southern's President Fairfax Harrison, in 1925. On return, the positive impression became a directive to ALCO, where Ps-4's were in full production. The tasteful color scheme received extensive media publicity, plus unmeasurable goodwill, far outlasting the service life of the original locomotives. (One Ps-4 was preserved. The No. 1401 can be experienced in person at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, where it is displayed in the Museum of History and Technology.) Six decades later, the Southern's flagship colors, with limited exception throughout the years, has continued in use to the present day (1987) in special service. The five BLW built Ps-4's were essentially identical to the basic USRA design of earlier ALCO built Ps-4's, with some exceptions: the tenders of Nos. 1405 - 1409 were of 12,000-gallon water capacity; the Elesco feedwater heater was installed only on the 1405 1408, the 1409 received a Coffin heater, later replaced by a Worthington SA model. As with all Ps-4's, the Southern eventually removed the original Baker valve gear, and continued the standard established with the Walschaerts type. Ps-4 No. 1408, seen in this portrait during a stop at Reidsville, North Carolina, in 1948, was originally assigned to the Atlanta Division where she plied the rails between Atlanta, Macon, Georgia, and Chattanooga, Tennessee. In 1937, the 1408 was involved in a major wreck at Courtney, South Carolina. The collision (following entanglement with a southbound freight pulled by Ms-4 2-8-2 No. 4872) left the 1408 turned over on its left side. Fireman Robert Elrod climbed out through the engineer's window and discovered his engineer had not escaped. Climbing back through escaping steam into the wreckage, the fireman pulled the engineer to safety. President Franklin D. Roosevelt praised fireman Elrod, and awarded a medal for his bravery. After extensive repairs, the 1408 resumed operation in steam passenger pool service until retirement in 1950. PHOTO BY DAVID P. DRISCOLL, JR.
