Prehistoric Ancient Southwest Pottery Jar Tarahumara indigenous ceramic bird

Description: Prehistoric Ancient Southwest Pottery Jar Tarahumara indigenous ceramic bird with added stand Tarahumara Rarámuri Pottery Jar with fire bird head. The Tarahumara, or self-called Rarámuri, are one of the largest indigenous tribes in North America with nearly 100,000 people. The majority are concentrated in the highlands of the Sierra Madre Occidental, Mexico, while others choose to live in las barrancas – the gorges of the Sierra Madre. Despite their large number, the tribe managed to remain relatively uninfluenced by the surrounding Mexican culture until recently. This is primarily a result of the harsh landscape in which they live, and their general reluctance to embrace outsiders. Their Native American style pottery is utilitarian and often primitive and represents a craft that Native potters have made for centuries. Created by the pinch and coil method, Tarahumara Indian pots are made by hand without a wheel. The pot is formed by hand coiling clay for the shape of the vessel, then polished with a smooth stone. Approx. Net Weight: 3.7lbs The stand was added later and holds the vessel perfectly. It is entwined carving of a birdlike design.I do not have ownership or exact provenance info, I collected this from the estate of an antique dealer.
