Description: FLIRTATION Artist: CONRAD KIESEL A HIGH QUALITY PHOTOGRAVURE PRINTED IN THE 1880'S!! PERFECT FOR FRAMING AS AN ART PRINT FOR YOUR DEN !! VERY ANTIQUE & OLD WORLD LOOKING. ITEM(s) OVER 110 YEARS OLD!! Flirtation seems as natural to some natures as breathing. It must be admitted, however, that the practice is not commendable. Sometimes a distinction is drawn between flirtation and coquetry; but it is difficult to prove an essential difference between the two. Coquetry has the better sound; but what is a coquette but a flirt? Nevertheless, there is a kind of coquetry that is called innocent, because it is free from guile and deludes no one seriously. The desire to be interesting is a weakness so universal that it is by no means surprising if an occasional member of the fair sex should seek to enhance her natural charms by little arts and tricks which are designed not only to set her off to advantage but at the same time to flatter the masculine object upon whom these arts are practiced, by causing him to feel that his own agreeable qualities have brightened the attractions of the charmer. But, however innocently meant, coquetry or flirtation is liable to be cruelly deceptive; and no sooner is it seriously indulged than it begins to vitiate the character. The typical flirt-man or woman-is selfish and heartless. The flirtation going on in our picture is not likely to prove serious in its consequences. We have heard it said of a vivacious lady that, if no better object presented itself, she would flirt with a broom-stick. The young lady of our picture, armed with that leading accessory, the fan, finds in the comical little Chinese image that leers at her with its almond eyes something quite superior to a broom-stick. It is, in fact, an excellent thing to practice on. The artist has given us a true touch of nature ; a piece of delicate .humor and, perhaps, of genial irony-. The picture has notable beauty as a tastefully-composed interior, in which the painter's mastery of draperies and of rich textures and surfaces is signally displayed. Conrad Kiesel was born at Dusseldorf, in 1846, and was a pupil of Paulsen, in Berlin, and of W. Sohn, in Dusseldorf. He is one of the most attractive of the rising genre painters of Germany.
