Rory has an MSc in Project Management (Henley Management College/Brunel University) and degrees in Naval Architecture (Solent University, Southampton) and Computer Aided Engineering (Coventry University). Rory is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (FRGS), and a professional member of the Royal Society (NZ), 1805 Club, the Nelson Society and the Ocean Cruising Club (OCC).Project Management: Rory was fortunate to choose a career in naval architect and shipbuilding that has been closely associated with the developed of most of the recent project management planning and control techniques. It was, therefore, a natural step for Rory to take a masters in Project Management at Henley Management college and Brunel University, before moving onto manage engineering projects, run project management education courses and writing and publishing books on project management.-As a Scientific Officer, Rory worked at three of the UKs key model testing establishments. At the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) (this is where Alan Turing wrote a paper on Machine Intelligence [1948] - this would be called AI today) Rory model tested offshore structures, particularly a tethered leg platform for the North Seas.-At the Admiralty Experimental Works (Haslar) Rory worked on the hydrodynamic development of the Churchill class SSN submarines (this included HMS Conqueror that saw action during the Falkland war).-At the National Maritime Institute (Southampton) [this is where Sir Christopher Cockerell developed the hovercraft] Rory worked on a large scale test on a military firing range to quantify the explosive properties of LPG/LNG for Shell Oil.As a Naval Architect, Rory worked on a range of marine and offshore projects in Britain, South Africa and the Middle East. As a ship designer Rory worked on the design a fleet replenishment ship, harbour tugs and offshore supply vessels. As a constructor, Rory worked on the construction of sidewall hovercrafts, and as a ship repair superintendent, Rory supervised the docking, repair and maintenance of a range of offshore supply vessels, oil tankers and jack-up barges.As a Project Manager, Rory project managed the project office to construct a 6,000 ton coal stacker reclaimer for Richards Bay Coal Terminal. This was a heavy engineering, material handling project that used an earned value production management system.As a Lecturer, Rory has set up a number of educational and professional Project Management programmes for universities, business schools and in-house corporate courses. Rorys project management books are widely used to support Project Management programmes. Rory is a visiting lecturer to universities and professional societies in Britain, America, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand.As an author and publisher, Rory has written a number of educational books on Project Management, Leadership and Entrepreneurship. Two of the titles have been published separately by John Wiley and Sons, together with foreign right translations into German, Greek and Chinese.As a member of the Ocean Cruising Club (OCC), Rory and Sandra sailed their Nicholson 35 (sailing yacht) from the UK to New Zealand via the Caribbean and the Panama Canal. History came alive as we followed in the foot steps of Christopher Columbus (501 years after he across the Atlantic Ocean) and in the wake of Captain James Cook (after he observed the transit of Venus to measure the astronomical unit and he discovered Terra Australis Incognita).
