In Greek, "psilos" (ψιλός) means smooth or bald, and "melas" (μέλας) for black. Psilomelane is often confused with Goethite or Hematite. However, unlike these two minerals, they are iron oxides. Psilomelane is actually a manganese oxide. The area of Taouz in Morocco has produced great examples of Psilomelane specimens growing in stalactitic masses or botryoidal bunches. While psilomelane specimens are not usually lustrous, they are more satiny and waxy. We have several pieces here from our boxes that exhibit high luster. The psilomelane specimens display lustrous metallic gun-powder black botryoidal bubbles. Some Psilomelane Crystals feature interesting growth marks, giving them a brain-like apperance.
