Description: Chinese Ghost and Love Stories A selection from the Liao Chai Stories by P'u Sung-Ling. Translated by Rose Quong.Published by Dennis Dobson, 1942.With 45 Chinese woodcuts. Rose Quong has selected and translated the most extraordinary and also the most delightful tales from the Liao Chai, the classic Chinese collection of weird and wondrous stories. Her translation conveys the authentic flavour of the original, keeping as close to Chinese imagery and mode of expression as the English language will permit. The stories deal with unusual and uncanny happenings, centring mainly around the relationship between spirits and human beings. In contrast to similar tales of the West, they reveal an atmosphere of intimacy and concord uniting ghosts and men, and are sensuous rather than gruesome. Apart from their literary interest, they provide invaluable insight into Chinese folklore. First UK Edition. Sized 19.5 x 25.5cm. Pp. 329. A scarce example.
