Description: Catherine Cookson Pure As The Lily 1973. Good condition. See pictures for exact condition. SYNOPSIS: "Life was not easy in the north of England in 1933, and for young Mary Walton it was particularly tough. Her father had been out of work for eight years, and her mother, who had no love for Mary, spent every nickel of the tiny family income on herself and on Mary's younger brother, Jimmy. When Mrs. Walton fell and broke her hip, and Mary was obliged to take over for her mother as housekeeper for the rich widower Mr. Tollett, their lives began to change dramatically. Handsome Mr. Tollett became hideously scarred from a brutal knife attack by Mary's father when he learned his daughter was pregnant, their mother set fire to a cottage where Jimmy's mistress perished, and the devastating air attack in 1944 in which Mary lost her grandparents, her husband and her stepson." Author: Catherine Cookson was born in Tyne Dock, the illegitimate daughter of a poverty-stricken woman, Kate, whom she believed to be her older sister. She began work in service but eventually moved south to Hastings, where she met and married Tom Cookson, a local grammar-school master. Although she was originally acclaimed as a regional writer - her novel The Round Tower won the Winifred Holtby Award for the best regional novel of 1968 - her readership quickly spread throughout the world, and her many best-selling novels established her as one of the most popular of contemporary women novelists. After receiving an OBE in 1985, Catherine Cookson was created a Dame of the British Empire in 1993. She was appointed an Honorary Fellow of St Hilda's College, Oxford, in 1997. For many years she lived near Newcastle upon Tyne. She died shortly before her ninety-second birthday, in June 1998.
