Description: R. Caldecott’s Picture Book No 1 – Illustrated by Randolph Caldecott With Dust Jacket. Published by Frederick Warne & Co. Ltd. Printed in Great Britain by Edmund Evans, Ltd., Rose Place, Globe Road, London E.1. This book is undated. When Randolph's "Picture Books" were first published, no dates of publication were included. This is not a first edition, as they were published by George Routledge & Sons. However, it was in about 1900 when the publishers Routledge sold their interests in children's books, with all the colour plates, to Frederick Warne & Co. Frederick Warne became a limited company in 1917, and because the name of the publisher states “Frederick Warne & Co. Ltd” then the book must be published after 1917. The printer’s address of Rose Place, Globe Road, London E.1. was, I believe, used from 1917 up until sometime in the 1940s and so, to the best of my knowledge, I am estimating that this book dates to during this period. This book includes the following titles:The Diverting History of John Gilpin (a poem by William Cowper); The Three Jovial Huntsmen; andAn Elegy to the Death of a Mad Dog.This book is in a nice vintage condition. There are absolutely beautiful colour illustrations throughout, both in black and white and colour, by Randolph Caldecott and also pictorial pastedowns and free endpapers. The pictorial dust jacket is striking in its illustration. It is worn, and there are a number of rips in it, as well as discolouration and wear, but it is intact and it is really nice to have the original jacket included. It has been clipped and a segment cut on the inside and the previous owner’s name is written in pen on the inside of the jacket. On the pale boards the same stunning illustration is shown as is on the jacket. The boards are in a good condition, although there are a couple of small marks, slight tanning and a rip to the top of the spine (please refer to the photograph for further details). The pages are thick and crisp and in an overall clean, and neat condition, with no rips and only the very occasional light/small crease or mark to the pages. There is no pen or pencil marks within this book (besides the pen previously mentioned on the inside of the jacket). All 87 pages are present. There are no loose pages and the binding is secure. Please study the photos carefully as to the condition of this book, as they do form part of the description. This really is a nice example of this book. This measures approximately 13.9 cm by 12 cm and 1.4 cm wide. It weighs approximately 177 grams. Thank you so much for looking.
