Description: Emerson, Ralph Waldo - English Traits - Phillips, Sampson, and Company: Boston, 1856 - First Edition / First Printing / First Issue - Matching dates present on title and copyright pages with no mention of later printings as required in order to denote the first printing of the first edition. First issue with “1” on the half title page, “Stereotyped at the Boston Stereotype Foundry” stated on copyright page, and with battered type on the last line of page 230. The book has rubbing, shelf wear, stains, and some bumps. The boards are reasonably straight, binding is square and firm, and internally there is spotting and foxing but nothing unusual for titles of this age. There is no writing and no bookplates. The cloth boards are well worn but are the original publisher’s from 1856 and are entirely unrestored. A solid and attractive example of this uncommon title from the father of Transcendentalism. A title which deals with Emerson’s travels to England with an interesting chapter dedicated to Stonehenge. All books are offered with a full 30 day postage paid return policy. All books which are in dust jackets will be mailed with a clear archival dust jacket protector fitted. Shipping costs can be combined if multiple purchases are made. Items will be packaged and shipped within one business day unless otherwise noted. Please always feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns.
