Description: Freed, Rita E. and Mint Museum of Art (Charlotte N.C.) (1989). Ramesses the Great: The Pharaoh and His Time. Charlotte, Mint Museum of Art Great catalog of a great exhibition of an even greater pharaoh. Ramesses II, commonly known as Ramesses the Great, was an Egyptian pharaoh of the Nineteenth Dynasty. He is often regarded as one of the greatest, most celebrated, and most powerful pharaohs of the New Kingdom, which itself was the most powerful period of ancient Egypt. Reigning from 1279–1213 BCE he is known for his extensive building programs and for the many colossal statues of him found all over Egypt. He conducted no fewer than 15 military campaigns, all resulting in victories. After establishing the city of Pi-Ramesses in the Nile Delta, he used it as the main staging point for his campaigns in Syria. This book is more than a catalog of an exhibition. The large part of it is devoted to a fully-illustrated essay on Ramesses, his period, his great building projects, and the great many images of him in colossal sculptures. The catalog elaborate on many smaller objects, funerary and everyday items. Each object is accompanied by a lengthy discussion of its significance.
