RARE 1800s Georgian Steel Wire Framed Spectacles with case

Description: A RARE example of c1800s/Georgian Wire Framed Spectacles with case. Fairly straight arms with X bridge. Approx 110 mm between hinges, approx 65 mm between lens centres. In the early 19th century, eyewear underwent a transformation as the Georgian era transitioned into the Victorian period. Wire-framed spectacles, dating back to the late 1700s and early 1800s, marked a significant development in optical technology. Here's a brief history of these c1800s/Georgian wire-framed spectacles: **Wire Frames in the Georgian Era:** - Wire-framed spectacles from the late 18th century and early 19th century represented a departure from earlier eyewear designs, which were often made of horn or leather. - The use of wire frames allowed for more delicate and lightweight designs, making them more comfortable for wearers. - These spectacles typically featured circular or oval lenses, and the frames were intricately crafted from wire, often in elegant, ornate designs. - The Georgian era was marked by a keen interest in art, culture, and fashion, which influenced eyewear styles. Spectacles became not only functional but also fashionable accessories. **Advancements in Eyewear:** - The c1800s saw advancements in lens-making, with lenses being crafted from materials like glass, crystal, or even early forms of plastic. - The development of hinged arms allowed for better fitting and comfort. Many wire-framed spectacles had straight arms that looped behind the ears, which was a departure from earlier models that had rigid handles. - These spectacles were often custom-made to fit the individual's prescription, reflecting a growing understanding of the need for tailored eyewear solutions. **Georgian Aesthetics:** - The Georgian era, spanning from 1714 to 1837, was characterized by a fascination with intricate designs, elegance, and a taste for the ornate. These characteristics were reflected in the design of wire-framed spectacles. **Legacy:** - Georgian wire-framed spectacles serve as a window into the past, showcasing not only the history of eyewear but also the broader cultural and aesthetic trends of the time. - They stand as a testament to human ingenuity and the evolving understanding of optics, making them prized collectibles for antique enthusiasts and historians. Today, these spectacles are highly sought after for their historical significance, intricate craftsmanship, and as a reminder of the evolving fashion and function of eyewear.  They remain a cherished piece of the past, representing an era of refinement and style in both form and function.
