The full name was Judy; or the London Serio-Comic Journal. The magazine's first issue was cover dated May 1, 1867, and the last issue October 23, 1907. The name "Judy" was in reference to Punch and Judy, and alluded directly to its more established rival, Punch magazine, which had been founded in 1841. Sold as down-market competitor to Punch, its politics were on the right ("Conservatism of the Truest and Bluest"), and it featured illustrated comic skits, satirical political sketches, light verse and caricatures.WHO IS THE ARTIST?William Henry Boucher (1842-1906) British artist/illustrator. Boucher was chief cartoonist at Judy for two decades, making him one of the greatest rivals to John Tenniel. Like Tenniel, he contributed illustrations to numerous important works of fiction and was a particular favorite of Robert Louis Stevenson (illustrating The Black Arrow and Kidnapped for the Young Folks Paper).
