Description: Rare 1938-40 Vintage Atwood Phantom 28 Ignition Model Airplane Engine Excellent Condition For your consideration is a very rare and very difficult to find 1938-40 vintage Atwood Phantom Rocket ignition model airplane engine. Beautiful vintage 1938 Atwood Phantom 28 ignition model airplane engine manufactured by Phantom Motors. If you're reading this, you undoubtedly know more about this motor than do I. My understanding is this engine was one of those produced after Bill Atwood had left his position at Aircraft Industries Corporation in 1938 to go to work for the Automatic Screw Machine Company in Los Angeles. This line then became a subsidiary of Automatic Screw Machine Company, known as Phantom Motors, also known as Phantom Motors, Hi–Speed Division. There Atwood designed the Bullet, Torpedo, and Hi-Speed motors for Phantom. When Atwood moved on to develop the Crown Champion lines in 1940, Phantom revamped their line and subsequent motors were of a significantly different design. Note the "Phantom Motors" name cast into the body, as well as the integral airfoil-shaped exhaust. Together with the straight fins on the head--as opposed to the radial ribs of previous motors, this points to a 1938 to 1940 date.The gussets on the sides of the motor as well as the ribbing on the bottom differentiate this motos from previous Atwood designs prior to 1938, as well as from Phantom Motos which would come after 1940, such as the P-30.Serial number: B1171 The engine appears to be in excellent condition. There is only one real Blemish: a small portion of one of the cylinder fins is missing. Cast into one side of this motor: Phantom Motor The other side: Made In U.S.A. Turns over with ease. Compression is good and the bearings seem tight. The engine is in Good used condition with wear commensurate with its age and use, yet not abused. Comes as pictured with installed spark plug and mounted nylon Top Flite propeller. We are unable to test this motor, so it is being sold "AS-IS". Please see photos for more details.
