Description: Rare Antique Opening of Princess Gardens Torquay Souvenir Trinket Box 1890 Here on offer is a rare antique Victorian souvenir trinket box made to celebrate the opening of The Princess Gardens in Torquay. Torquay became a fashionable seaside resort when the Napoleonic Wars interrupted continental travel in the late 18th century. By the 1870s the resort needed more facilities for visitors, the town planned a pier and public gardens. Princess Gardens, named after Princess Louise, daughter of Queen Victoria, was created on reclaimed land alongside Princess Parade at the foot of the hill opposite the picturesque terraced cliff walks of the Royal Terrace Gardens. The foundation stone was laid by Princess Louise in 1890. A pavilion at the eastern end of Princess Gardens was added in 1909-11, followed by a war memorial designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield in 1920. The trinket box has red velvet covering the structure and has a textured red paper interior. The lid features a photograph of the Princess Gardens in its earliest form, protected by glass. One corner of the interior paper has fractured along the 'hinge'. This interesting trinket box is offered in good antique condition, it measures about 12.2cm by 8.2cm by 3.4cm. A wonderful addition for a themed collection. Please see my pictures for the details of the condition. Thanks for looking and Happy Bidding!
