Description: Here is a wonderful novelty from Victorian period England. Called a Penny Lick glass because a customer could get one penny's worth of ice cream. The glass is thick with a lovely purplish hue to it. Measures 3 1/4" tall by 2" in diameter across the bottom. Penny licks were introduced in London for street vendors to give a small serving of ice cream in the late 19th century. The thick glass is actually more shallow so that the consumer was under the impression that they were getting an ample serving of ice cream. Then the customer would return the glass to the vendor, who would just wipe the inside with a cloth and dirty water and served the next customer. Hence, the outbreak of tuberculosis which lead back to the unsanitary conditions of the glasses. The penny lick was then banned in 1899 In excellent overall condition with no damage or repairs. There are fine surface scratches to the surface of the glass from age and wear, but they are very faint. In the interest of accuracy, I offer magnified photos of all angles. Let these photos guide you before any decision to bid. This little glass is pre-owned. It has been enjoyed for over 100 years and naturally will exibit some sort of wear as a result.
