Description: Please have a look at this impressive Colored Plaster Medal by Charles Hazeltine. It dates from the 1880's and is signed by Hazeltine himself. This large, thick piece measures about 63mm in diameter and weighs 38.57 grams. Medal is in flawless Choice to Gem Uncirculated condition. It features superb color and bold high-relief detail. This is a splendid and possibly unique example of Hazeltine's art. It is the only example of this rare type that we have seen.This medal was issued in the 19th century circa 1884. It was crafted by the American artist Charles Hazeltine. He lived from 1826 to 1910. He kept a shop in New Bedford, Massachusetts where he sold art and music. Hazeltine relocated to Rhode Island where he lived in Providence and Pawtucket. He is famous for his sculpture which he made from a secret formulation of colored plaster. He took his mysterious plaster recipe to his grave. This example is made of such plaster. Please see picture number nine to view a different example of his work. This medallion features a portrait of the theologian Reverend John Wesley and his quote "THE WORLD IS MY PARRISH." Wesley's born and died dates are given, as are the dual dates of 1784 and 1884. The obverse side is done in colors of terracotta brown, light green and cream. The dark brown reverse features the hand inscribed signature of C. HAZELTINE and PROV RI. The three arched markings are believed to represent mountains. Evidence of a partial date is noted below this. Medallion appears to be unglazed or matte finished. Piece sports a thick edge. This large medal is in stunning Choice to Gem Uncirculated condition. It displays high relief detail and rich lustrous color. Piece looks to be as fresh as the day it was created.
