Description: Name: Rhenocystis lapendulata (Carpoid) Age: Devonian Formation: Hunsruck Shale (Bundenbach) Location: Bundenbach, Germany Size: Carpoid is 1.5" long, plate is 6" tall!We recently acquired some nice fossils from the late Joseph Butterfield Collection (NJ). We will be auctioning these fossils here over the next few weeks. This is a very rare and unusual Devonian fossil. It is a primitive carpoid, Rhenocystis lapendulata, from the famous Bundenbach Slate of Germany. The quarry where this specimen was found used to mine roofing slate for decades, but is now shut down - the only way to obtain the unique fossils from this site is through the dispersal of old collections. This distinct cystoid has a long theca with good plate structure preserved. The extinct animal has a long arm intact, and a long, curling stem is still attached to the body of the echinoderm. The striking fossil is replaced with iron pyrite, or ''fool's gold'', and is beautifully showcased in the center of a large, squared plate of roofing slate. This is an excellent example of this rare Devonian echinoderm from a classic fossil location.A Certificate of Authenticity from EXTINCTIONS.com is included with this specimen. Insurance is included in the cost of shipping.Note: International customers may have to pay a duty at Customs - every country's rules are different.
