Rare ERRATUM jacket UK Damned Damned Damned STIFF LP SEEZ1 NM/VG+

Description: You are bidding on a copy of the 1977 UK LP Damned Damned Damned by The Damned with the notorious erratum photo of Eddie And The Hot Rods instead of The Damned. For details about how a photo of the wrong band landed on the cover, page down between the hash marks for a lively article by J. Bennett published by Revolver in 2021. I bought the record new during my last semester of college in London in 1977. My school, Syracuse Uiversity (NY), had a small branch in London's Bayswater neighborhood. Before I flew there, thanks to the Ramones, the Dictators, and a few other New York City bands that had released records by then, I was already crazy about punk rock. Little did I know how much the London scene totally eclipsed what was happening in the US! Bands were everywhere and I had the good fortune to catch countless shows at the Roxy and other clubs & pubs & theatres (like the Roundhouse) featuring all the greats (Sex Pistols, Clash, Jam, Gen X, The Police pre-Sting, etc.) and the not-so-great. But every band was trying hard and it was a time of intense creativity in music & art. Also, it was fun as heck! Naturally, as soon as bands released records, I bought them, including this one which I've barely played. Over the decades I've kept it safely stored in nonsmoking, pet-free apartments and homes in which I've dwelled. It's been a great keepsake of an exciting time, but I'm moving to a smaller place and, alas, must part with it! CONDITION: Vinyl is near-mint - no scuffs, no scratches. I'll grade the jacket VG++; it's super clean with no stains or wear, but the top right corner has a very thin surface wrinkle (see the photo) and if you inspect closely, you can see a super-thin wrinkle in the bottom right corner and some tiny dings along the top edge. The back cover has a few similar barely-visible creases. Sorry, no front cover sticker which I adhered to a diary I kept during my semester in London. I still have the diary and will send a photo of it on request! SHIPPING: Free fully insured shipping to US addresses. In fact, it beat the Sex Pistols' Never Mind the Bollocks to the shelves by eight months. Boasting instant punk staples like "Neat Neat Neat" and "New Rose," the album also features an iconic sleeve photo in which Damned members Brian James, Captain Sensible, Dave Vanian and Rat Scabies had just been hit in the face with cream pies. It appears that getting their debut album out wasn't the only thing the Damned beat the Sex Pistols to. In 1980, the Pistols were the subject of a posthumous mockumentary entitled The Great Rock 'N' Roll Swindle. But the Damned — or at least their record label, Stiff Records — had pulled a pretty good swindle with Damned Damned Damned three years prior. Instead of the live photo of the Damned that appears on the back cover of almost every copy of the album, some copies were released with a promotional photo of British pub rockers Eddie & the Hotrods.Stiff acknowledged the mistake, slapping a sticker on the back of the misprinted albums: "Erratum: Due to Record Company error, a picture of Island recording artists Eddie & the Hot Rods has been printed instead of The Damned. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and the correct picture will be substituted on future copies." Though it was a matter of much debate for years, it's now widely accepted that the misprint wasn't actually a misprint at all: It was a deliberate joke. Either way, these particular copies of Damned Damned Damned go for big bucks. And if you're looking for one in the original shrink wrap with the red "Damned Damned" lettering on it — thus completing the Damned Damned Damned of the title when combined with the "Damned" on the sleeve itself — expect to pay even more. Misprints with no shrink go for at least $400. If it's still in the shrink, though? You're looking at anywhere from one to two thousand — or more — depending on condition. In November of 2020, a sealed mint copy sold on Discogs for $2,142.86.Now that's an expensive joke.#####
