Description: This 19th c. French satinwood letter box with concave sides is unique in my 50 years in the antique business. In edition to its very unusual shape it is stunningly decorated with facet cut steel mounts in the form of swags. stars, jewels and amazingly with the word Reconnaissance spelled out in cursive with these tiny cut steel letters. The box also has a steel handle with facetted posts and a steel oval escutcheon with a beaded edge. The lid is cut with two slots (with trefoil ends) apparently to accept letters perhaps in a hotel or perhaps in an office. The lid has a lock (sorry no key) and the polished interior has two compartments. The box sits on flattened bun feet (possibly replacements). The box has a few small losses and tiny chips (one slightly larger one on the underside of the lid) and a tiny minority of the cut steel beads are missing. But the box looks amazing and is truly one of a kind. It is 10" long x 5.25" tall x 6.75" deep. Stock number SA2D-55
