RARE HAWAII 1929 KAWAIHAO CHURCH ENGRAVED SLATE "MOANALUA ROCK" BY SCOTT MANLEY

Description: RARE HAWAII 1929 KAWAIHAO CHURCH ENGRAVED SLATE "MOANALUA ROCK" This very important artwork was done on an original shingle that came from the historic Kawaihao Church on Oahu, Hawaii. The shingle dates back to 1929. In 1998, engraved shingles were sold through the Bishop Museum created by artist Scott Kekuhaupio Manley. This particular shingle is entitled "Surfer" and numbered #2052. The reverse includes a certificate of authenticity issues by the Bishop Museum - signed and dated by the artist. About Kawaihao Church Engraved Slate Shingles:"All of the stone used for engraving was quarried nearly a hundred years ago in Slate Valley, NY. They were once slate shingles on the roof of the Kawaiaha'o Church form 1927 to 1992, wich is located on the corner of Punchbowl and King streets in Honolulu, Hawai'i. The church was established in 1820 by King Kamehameha II and Queen Ka'ahumanu. It is the sanctuary at wich the royal family of Hawai'i went to pray once they accepted Christianity into their lives. It's name Ka wai a ha'o means "The waters of Ha'o" in Hawaiian wich is derived form Ha'o, a queen of O'hau who had a fondness for bathing in a fresh water spring. , wich bubbled up form the ground amidst the once dusty and sun parched plains of Honolulu.The original thatched grass church was replaced by a great stone church in 1842, initiated by the Rev. Hiram Bingham. It is on the rejister for both state and national historical buildings. The walls of the still existing church are made up of 14,000 blocks of coral while the original roof was made of wood shingles wich were replaced by this slate in 1927. In 1992, the slate was restored due to the deterioration of fasteners. Mark Kahuokapono, brother of the artist came into posession of many peices of the slate and saved them form being destroyed. The shingles were transported to Kawela where they awaited the hands, heart, and hertiage of the artist, Kehuhaupi'o to depict images of his Hawaiian history and culture."
