Description: RARE LARGE 18thc NORWEGIAN FOLK ART HAND PAINTED WOODEN TANKARD/PITCHER c1750 Click images to enlarge Description A fine exampe of an 18th century Norwegian hand painted tankard/pitcher 18" tall. The base is 6 1/4" in diameter tapering to 4" diameter at the top; the lid is 8 1/2" long. On one side is a hand painted portrait of a young woman in traditional costume; on the other side is an etched design of flowere & leaves. This design also appears around the base, top, handle & lid. The base has been carved such that the tankard stands on three equally spaced feet with a skirt between each foot having a saw tooth edge. The tankard is generally in very good condition. There are a couple of minor issues. Firstly there is a double split in the wood at the top attachment point of the handle (2" & 1" long). A screw and washer has been fitted probably at the point where the original peg was positioned (photo 18). Secondly there is a 2" fine split in the base (photo 19). There are three smaller splits in the sawtooth skirt. Inside the base are initials which appear to be either S.K.U or S.X.U. I have owned this tankard for about 25 years and it is in the exact same condition now as when I acquired it. If you have any questions please email.
