Description: The Makonde people traditionally lived along the Mueda Plateau, in southeastern Tanzania and northern Mozambique, where historians believe they originally settled during the 1700s and 1800s. They produce intricate Tree of Life (“Ujamaa.”) carvings that feature figures. A Makonde myth says that the mother of all the Makonde was originally a wooden carving that came to life. Sometimes these carvings are referred to as a family tree carving portraying a family or entire community featuring men, women and children with each person hand in hand with each other. Carved by hand, intricately done and can take months to create. Carved from one hollowed-out tree branch. The sculpture is from the inner(dark) ebony and the base is the outer(light) ebony. Created by the Makonde people of Southeast Tanzania.Carved from one ebony trunkMeasures: 16.5”H x 5.5”w x 4.5” deepWeight: 4.5 lbs. 'No returns, no international shipping.
