Description: RARE Antique National Foundry #149 Cast Iron Boston Terrier Dog Heavy Hollow Door Stop 9.75" x 10" x 4.5" Note photos: He has a hole in his muzzle, adding to his character. c. 1880-1940 Hand Painted - Natural Patina HISTORY: National Foundry of Whitman, Massachusetts was a contemporary of Hubley. They started production between 1880-1885, just before Hubley started in 1894. The foundry made cap pistols in bronze and later in cast iron, along with andirons, candlesticks, bookends & door stops. They made mostly bronze and later their cast iron door stops became a large part of their business. The door stops were sold as "Un-Painted" Grey Iron Castings or electroplated with brass, copper, or nickel. Their catalog gave specific directions to follow for painting. Since everyone painted their own, one can see why there are so many paint variations. They also sold their door stops painted which is why some of their door stops looked the same. Today, the company is called Whitman Foundry and produces castings used for machinery parts.
