Description: ORIGINAL WILLIAM P ABBE (1916-1983) 'DAGGETT ST EDGARTOWN' MARTHA'S VINEYARD SIGNED LIMITED EDITION SILKSCREEN This is just a great original piece. My wife and I collect Martha's VIneyard art and I bought this a while ago with the intent on hanging it in my home. Turns out it doesnt really fit in with the rest of the stuff on the particular wall so I have decided to sell it. This is a scarce original serigaph by important American serigraph artist William P Abbe. For those not familiar with the artist, I have included his biography below. This is a particularly scarce print as I have not been able to find another example of this print anywhere. Considering it was an edition of 40, I am not sure how many are even around. Image measures 10 1/2 x 15 inches. Signed, numbered and titled in ink below the image. Print is in outstanding condition. I have not taken the print out of the frame but you can see some faint waviness to the paper which leads me to believe it is not laid down. Original matte and frame are complimentary and ready to hang. Frame measures 18 3/4 x 22 1/4 inches. Do your own research on this print. A must have for any Martha's Vineyard or American print collector. FREE SHIPPING ANYWHERE IN THE UNITED STATES! For those not familiar with the artist, his biography from a gallery that sells the artist's work reads: "William Abbe first studied art at the Rectory School, Pomfret, under Beatrice Stevens. He later studied at both the Yale Drama School and at the Art Students League of New York, under Harry Sternberg. Sternberg (born, 1904 - died, 1995) was a master of both lithography and silk-screening and William Abbe's initial works of art in these mediums were completed under his tutelage. William Abbe concluded his studies at Columbia University and received an art education degree. From 1940 to 1943, William Abbe served as an illustrator for the United States Army. In 1944 and 1945 he was an official artist for the military in France and Germany. At the end of the war he accepted the post of artist-in-residence and teacher at St. Paul's School, Concord, New Hampshire. He remained there for thirty-two years and retired in 1981. He also spent most of his summers and all of his retirement in the Cape Cod area of Oak Bluffs, Martha's Vineyard, where he maintained a permanent studio. This coastal scene no doubt portrays the ocean surrounding the island of Martha's Vineyard. Employing five overlaying colors, it probably dates from shortly after the end of the Second World War. During his career William Abbe's prints and paintings were exhibited at such institutions as St. Paul's School, the New Britain Museum of American Art and at the Library of Congress, Washington (1950). Although the silk-screen medium predated the Depression era, it wasn't used for anything but commercial purposes until the end of the 1930's. At this time now famous artists such as Guy Maccoy, Harry Gottlieb and Elizabeth Olds began to experiment with the aesthetic possibilities of silk-screening. The medium, with its characteristic layers of flat colours, was found to be both economical and artistically challenging. Many fine artists dedicated themselves to this new method and in May of 1940 the Silk Screen Group was formed in New York. The work of these artists paved the way for the highly complex and sophisticated silk-screen printmakers of today. " CHECK THE PICTURES ON THIS GREAT PIECE. DONT MISS THIS OPPORTUNITY.
