Description: Discontinued TRAILGUIDE knife handmade by Puma in Solingen, Germany (see blade). The TRAILGUIDE model has been a Puma classic since the 1970s and 1980s, produced over time in a variety of handle materials (bone, G10, stag, olive wood). The model for your consideration is from a revised version of some classic Puma models (additionally: WHITE HUNTER II and SKINNER) introduced in 1996. It is distinguished from current versions by its textured, anti-slip black polymer/Kraton handle, a satin finished stainless steel trailing point blade of 12.5 cm (4 3/4") length, and a black Cordura nylon sheath that secures with a flap and a snap fastener over the handle, protecting the knife as a whole against loss or damage. It is new in its box and has been in my personal collection since 2001. It has never been used, sharpened or otherwise mistreated! The Kraton handle in combination with the Scandi grind (rather than the current full flat grind with blood groove) make this version a unique opportunity for Puma collectors. PUMA was founded in Solingen, Germany in 1769. The Solingen cutlery industry originated in the Middle Ages, with a first guild of grinders and hardeners receiving this privilege in 1401, followed by sword makers in 1472 and knife makers in 1571. Notably, knife makers at the time were obliged to mark their blades for their manufacturing origin (Me Fecit Solingen, Latin for Solingen made me), cleverly anticipating modern branding and marketing practices by a few centuries. To wit, the first U.S. Trademark Act was passed only three hundred years later, in 1871; the oldest U.S. trademark still in use is Sampson Ropes, first registered in 1884. PUMA reintroduced the Me Fecit Solingen inscription on some of its recent anniversary knives. Just some historical trivia, should you be interested...
