Description: This is a rare lithograph of Thomas Wilson Dorr 1805-1854 the 16th Governor of Rhode Island from May 1,1842 until January 23, 1843. He spearheaded the Dorr Rebellion, an attempt by residents to force a broader democracy, to change the state’s electoral rules, that were still under the 1663 Colonial Charter, that required land ownership to vote. Dorr wasfound guilty of treason and was sentenced to solitary confinement and hard labor for life. The harshness of the sentence was condemned, and Dorr was released in 1845. I can only find two other examples of this work, that are more than double my asking price. Under his name it reads “Elected (Govenor) of Rhode Island, Under The People’s Constitution. “The People are Sovereign, and I Cannot and Shall Not Compromise Their Rights”. The 15 1/2” x 12 3/4” hand colored lithograph is ingood condition , in a period 19 1/2” x 16 3/4” frame, that has chipped veneer. A
