Description: ALEXANDER HAMILTON. Alexander Hamilton (circa 1755–1804) was an American soldier and statesman who served as an aide to George Washington during the American Revolution, coauthored The Federalist Papers, and served as the first United States Secretary of the Treasury. In July 1804, sitting Vice President Aaron Burr, stung by a published criticism authored by Hamilton, challenged the esteemed statesman to a duel and fatally wounded him. A VOLUME LIKELY FROM THE LIBRARY OF ALEXANDER HAMILTON, COAUTHOR OF THE FEDERALIST PAPERS AND THE FIRST UNITED STATES SECRETARY OF THE TREASURY First edition, volume II of John Pinkerton’s Modern Geography (Philadelphia: John Conrad, & Co. and others, 1804) likely from the library of Alexander Hamilton. Contains the ownership signatures of his two sons on the title page: “John C. Hamilton” in pencil and “Alexander Hamilton, Novr. 10 1805, New York” in ink. Measures 9.25 by 6.25 inches, 689 pages, contains full contemporary calf boards with a red morocco lettering label on the spine, and in very good condition with wearing to the boards (primarily to the edges), a professional repair on the front cover, splitting along the joint between the spine and front cover, minor staining and toning on several pages at the beginning and end, and annotations throughout. CONTAINS THE OWNERSHIP SIGNATURES OF HIS TWO SONS ON THE TITLE PAGE: “JOHN C. HAMILTON, ALEXANDER HAMILTON, NOVR. 10 1805, NEW YORK” This would have been one of the last volumes purchased by Hamilton since it was printed the year he died and is signed by his two sons a little over a year after his death. We were only able to locate two other volumes from Hamilton’s library that each contained his secretarial ownership signature and they commanded $10,710 and $22,680 at Sotheby’s in April 2021.
