Description: For sale is this vintage book of 180 years old. It has had some substantial use, but the interior pages are in very fine condition. The book cover has some aged wear and is graded as fair. The binding is chipped (see pic); slightly broken from the back cover but still fully attached to the front cover. No personal writing on the pages. All in all, very clean. This is a unique and rare antique music book titled THE PSALTERY. The book consists of Psalms, Hymns, Chants and Anthems played and sung in the early and mid-1800's. The book was published in 1845 under the sanction and with the approbation of the Boston Academy of Music, and the Boston Handel and Haydn Society; Boston: Wilkins, Carter, and Company. In its time, this was one of the most complete music books ever published for church choirs, congregations, singing schools, and societies. Church music was going through a painful transition from chants from the Catholic-based churches to a more melodic music introduced in the Protestant communities. This music book contains all forms of that transition. The first 32 pages are devoted to teaching the "Elements of Vocal Music," very useful for teaching choirs. Total of 344 pages. Hardcover.
