RARE WW2 ALLIED "WATER SUPPLY OVERPRINT" map of "TORINO" (TURIN, ITALY) Oct 1943

Description: A fantastic original WW2 ALLIED "WATER SUPPLY OVERPRINT" map of "TORINO" (TURIN, ITALY) which was produced in October 1943 - just weeks into the Allied Invasion of Italy. For major operations such as this one, all kinds of unusual maps were prepared to cover almost any eventuality. Throughout history, it has been commonplace for retreating armies to burn and destroy anything of value to the advancing enemy, and water supplies were no exception. German destruction of civil water supply lines and the poisoning of wells etc were rightly anticipated by the Allies, and this is why maps like this were so important. That said, they weren't made generally available to troops on the ground and would have been used by higher ranking officials during the planning and execution stages of major offensives. Therefore, such maps were only produced in very small numbers and are incredibly rare. The map was actually retained officially, and was eventually removed from the official record when the Government storage facility in which it was housed was closed down around twenty years ago. As a result, its condition is immaculate. The rear of the map is taken up by a huge amount of explanatory information. Measures 72cm x 56cm. Will be rolled carefully and shipped in a cardboard tube.
